Wine Shop in Wells

The shelves line the walls of the same room we serve food in. Buy a bottle to take home, or open it at the table for £10 corkage and drink it here. A few steps from the Cathedral, in a quiet cobbled corner off Sadler Street.

Wines chosen by David

Every wine in the shop is chosen by David Schroetter, who grew up surrounded by the vineyards of the Loire Valley. He buys from small European growers he knows and trusts, and a number of the wines are exclusive to the UK. There is nothing behind what is on the shelf but one person's taste, built over a long time.

That also means you can ask. If you tell David what you are cooking, what you drank last that you liked, or roughly what you want to spend, he will put something in your hand. It is the part of a proper wine shop that a supermarket aisle cannot replicate.

What we stock

  • French and European

A bias towards the Loire, the Languedoc and the Rhône, alongside Italian, Spanish and a few New World bottles that earn their place.

  • Across the range

Reds from light through medium to full bodied, whites largely dry, with rosé, sparkling, dessert wines and magnums alongside.

  • The shelves change constantly

David buys in small quantities from small growers, so bottles come and go quickly. The full range lives in the shop, and it is always worth asking what has just landed.

Wine cases & gifts

A small selection of what we sell online: David's monthly cases, our house collection, a case chosen around your taste, and gift cards.

◆◆◆

Our own house wines

We have our own house wines, red, white and rosé, all 100% Grenache, with labels hand painted by David. They are available by the glass in the bar at £8, or £9.50 for a large glass, by the bottle, and by the case as The Pressoir House Collection.

Let David keep choosing

Individual bottles are not sold online, because the shelves move too quickly. Cases are, and there are three ways to have them arrive.

  • David's Monthly Wine Selection

    Every month

A case of hand-picked European wines. Available as a mixed case, or all red or all white.

  • Choose 6 bottles

    Curated for you

Tell us what you like and roughly what you want to spend, and we will build a case around it.

  • The Pressoir House Collection

    Our own labels

A case of our house wines, labels hand painted by David.

Drink it here, or take it home

Any bottle on the shop shelves can be drunk in for £10 corkage. In practice the whole shop becomes the wine list. That relationship between the shelves and our restaurant in Wells is how The Pressoir developed: wine came first, and the food grew naturally around people wanting to stay. Gifts

A gift card or a curated case both travel well, and we can put together mixed cases for weddings, corporate gifts or thank yous. See weddings and private events for larger orders.
