Wine Shop in Wells, Somerset

The Pressoir is an independent wine shop in Heritage Courtyard, a quiet cobbled corner off Sadler Street in Wells, a few steps from the Cathedral. The shelves line the walls of the same room we serve food in, which means you can buy a bottle to take home, or open it at the table for a small corkage fee and drink it here.

Wines chosen by David

Every wine in the shop is chosen by David Schroetter, who grew up surrounded by the vineyards of the Loire Valley. He buys from small European growers he knows and trusts, and a number of the wines are exclusive to the UK. There is no algorithm and no central buying list behind what's on the shelf, just one person's taste, built over a long time.

That also means you can ask. If you tell David what you're cooking, what you drank last that you liked, or roughly what you want to spend, he'll put something in your hand. It's the part of a proper wine shop that a supermarket aisle can't replicate.

What we stock

Mostly French and European, with a bias towards the Loire, the Languedoc and the Rhône, alongside Italian, Spanish and a few New World bottles that earn their place. Reds run from light through medium to full bodied, the whites are largely dry, and there's rosé, sparkling, dessert wines and magnums alongside.

The shelves change constantly. Because David buys in small quantities from small growers, individual bottles come and go quickly, and we don't sell them one at a time online. The full range lives in the shop in Wells, so the only way to see everything is to come in, and it's worth asking what's just landed.

Our own house wines

We have our own house wines, red, white and rosé, with labels hand painted by David. They're available by the glass or the bottle in the bar, and by the case as The Pressoir House Collection.

Drink it here, or take it home

Any bottle on the shop shelves can be drunk in for a small corkage fee. In practice the whole shop becomes the wine list, which is a good way to try something you'd hesitate to commit to by the case. Read more about our wine bar in Wells.
